- 'Jeju Water House: Moving in Hope' celebration to take place Nov. 24 in Seoul

Hongik University, known for its emphasis on the arts, hosted Ricardo Legorreta during his first visit to Korea in 2008 where he gave a presentation to university students.
Titled, Jeju Water House: Moving in Hope, the festival's purpose is to highlight the value of late Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta'sCasa del Agua, a model house built in Jungmun, Seogwipo City, next to the International Convention Center Jeju. Scheduled for demolition by the property owner, protestors hope to preserve it as a community art and performance space.
The1st cultural festival for this cause was held on Oct. 20 at the Casa del Agua site in Jeju.
The Mexican government and artistic community, including Mexicans living in Korea, have protested the destruction of this artwork since last July; Jeju and mainland citizens, as well as foreign residents, have joined in this endeavor.
Casa del Agua integrates Mexican and Jeju cultural features and is a symbol of cultural exchange between these regions.
At the 5th Meeting of the Joint Commission on Educational and Cultural Cooperation of Mexico and Korea held on Sept. 19 in Mexico City, the two countries signed an agreement for a bilateral cooperation program in educational, scientific, and cultural fields during the 2012-2014 period. This is to honor 100 years of interaction between Korea and Mexico.
Preservation Society members hope that the preservation of Casa del Agua can be viewed in this light.
Highlights of Saturday's event include:
- Photographic Exhibition by Seok-Jung photographers
- Speeches by architects, cultural experts, and the vice chairman of the Busan International Biennale
- Performances by: Haja Center (Yonsei) Festival Production, a Mexican mariachi band, vocalist Paek Tae Jong, Yonsei University band GoGoMa, Indie Band Man & Woman Riding Stella, Takapi, Javo Island, Core Magazine, Rock 'n' Roll Radio, and Mama Lady
- Demonstration of Support and Petition Signing.
All performances and other support are provided as donation. The event is open to all.
